I spoke with Lydia Patrick, Life & Trends Reporter at Newsweek for this story:
“TikTokers Plead for Fans To Follow Them Elsewhere As Ban Looms”
Below is a brief extract from the article. Please visit Newsweek to read the full story here.
“Dr. Mara Einstein (@drmaraeinstein), a professor at Queens University in New York and consumerism expert, highlighted TikTok’s unparalleled algorithm and community-building capabilities.
She explained that creators often gain tens of thousands of followers on TikTok compared to just a few thousand on other platforms.
”The variety of content goes beyond pretty pictures and perfection that is the norm of Instagram,” she told Newsweek, noting that TikTok’s ease of use and diverse content make it unique.
She is an advocate for educating people who might not be able to afford her books through her videos.
Einstein believes TikTok’s loss would have ripple effects on industries like publishing, where trends like BookTok have driven sales and even revitalized brick-and-mortar bookstores.
”Millions of small businesses may shutter,” she said.
While some creators have diversified their online presence, Einstein argues that the app cannot be replaced.
”Social media will die,” Einstein said, referencing her book Hoodwinked: How Marketers Use the Same Tactics as Cults. “TikTok cannot be replicated, and there simply aren’t good alternatives.”
